Genre Essay.

Genre is a tool that guides us to be able to distinguish a difference between texts and audience responses to certain things, by dividing them into categories based on common elements.
All genre's have sub-genres, sub-genres are the common elements which are then divided into more specific categories that allow audiences to identify them.

Steve Neale a genre theorist stated that 'genre are not systems they are processes' - they are dynamic and they evolve over time. In my opinion i think the reason for genre development may be due to the evolving of technology, as technology develops there will be new props and networks to make genre's better. There will be more focus as they will have more tools to help them. Also the reason for development f genre may be to please the audience, they may have changing tastes and they may require to see different things there for publishers need to meet their audiences needs. Also the circumstances in the 1950's will be so much more different than the circumstances now, due to the changing environment. In horror a splatter film made in 80's e.g. Evil Dead will not have the same concept as one made now e.g. Human Centipede, although they may be the same sub-genre, due to technology and peoples changing opinions the concept will be different, also due to the changes in wider society. the typical horror conventions may not have been able to perform their full potential due to the lack of materials. Genre has come a long way and it still has a long way to go.

Mittell argues that industries use genre to sell products to audiences, he also says that genre allow audiences to make choices of what products they may want to consume through acceptance, in order to fulfil a particular pleasure. Producers believe it helps them appeal more to the audience as they audience have a say in what genre they watch therefore producers seeing that will help them know what to make.

Altman states that genre can give pleasure in three different forms. Emotional, Visceral&Intellectual.
Emotional being it gives the audience an emotional pleasure, meaning they go away feeling a type of emotion. Visceral being, physical responses having feelings of 'gut wrenches' and also feeling the 'rollercoaster ride'. Intellectual meaning, in some genres such as thriller, they offer a pleasure in trying to unravel the mystery. Pleasure is derived by deciphering the plot and being able to be surprised by the unexpected. In my summer trailer I included more Intellectual puzzles as tension was building to see how my main character was having dreams about therefore he audience will try and solve the mystery. I did not include Emotional or Visceral that is something i will do.

Metz argued that genre go through a cycle of changes during their lifetime.
-Experimental Stage
-Classical Stage
-Parody
-Deconstruction
This is known as genre transformation and development.

Abercrombie - 'the boundaries between genre are shifting & becoming permeable', he is also concerned with the modern television which he suggests to be engaged in a 'steady dismantling of genre. This may mean things are starting to merge together and beginning to become like other genre's.
