Contemporary Media Regulation.

There are many different forms of media around the world such as, music videos, video games, films, magazines, news papers and tv programmes. In order for it to be safe for everyone to view, they need to be regulated, by higher authority such as the bbfc. Regulation is being  able to control what the audience sees and knowing if it is appropriate enough for the different ages. It is is important to regulate things in the media as it allows people to take necessary precautions when watching it and allows people to know the kind of content it carries.

Music Videos include people that others view as role models and they begin to objectify them, Laura Mulvey's male gaze will apply as society will begin to objectify women and deem it as acceptable.
Video games are also becoming more vivid, and it may be harder for vulnerable audience to see the difference between reality and highly vivid video games. in addition to this, films are also highly vivid, therefore distinguishing between reality and the world of film can be challenging. Therefore regulation is needed, so it doesn't affect society, however it still affects some people.

In order for us to be able to have faith in the people who regulate to make it effective there has to be some key factors such as; the need for impartial decisions, they must be multi-racial & cultural and multi-gender, in order to be representative of society, there had to be a democratic decision where everyone has their own say, there must be multiple voices and viewing, so different people can pick up on different things in the different viewings. They must be adults, as they have had experiences of the word. Lastly they must be non-governmental.

There are many reasons why we should regulate but most of it comes down to protecting the vulnerable, especially children. It is also to uphold the law, as a negative message to remind people of implications if the law is broken, To prevent the immoral being shown e.g racism, discrimination etc.
To protect against harmful messages and lastly to avoid perpetrating real criminals.
